2 Live Crew’s Fresh Kid Ice Passes Away at 53

Founding member of 2 Live Crew, Fresh Kid Ice has died in Miami.

Fresh Kid Ice formed the legendary Hip-Hop crew with DJ Mr. Mixx and Amazing Vee in 1984 before linking up with Luther Campbell later when they signed with his record label.

TMZ reports that the group’s manager confirmed Ice died at 7:50 AM Thursday in a Miami hospital due to an undisclosed medical condition.

Fellow group member Luke Campbell tweeted out is condolences to Ink’s family, letting fans know we truly lost a legend.

Fresh Kid Ice whose real name was Chris Wong Won, and he and the group became poster children for First Amendment Rights after their As Nasty As They Wanna Be album was the first to be labeled legally obscene by the government.

He and Campbell were arrested in 1990 after a live performance police deemed obscene and lewd after in 1989 their album, As Nasty As They Wanna Be was deemed too controversial by a Florida judge. In 1994, however, 2 Live Crew did make it to the Supreme Court, though not on obscenity charges.

Won is a pioneer for Asian rappers and released a memoir  The Tell All Autobiography of a Hip Hop Legend.

He was a true pioneer, our condolences to the Won family.
