Akon is being sued by his music producer Leland Clopton for more than a million dollars, according to TMZ.
The celebrity news magazine reported that Clopton claims Akon’s record label, Konvict Entertainment, hid finances from him for years to avoid paying his royalties. According to the filed court documents, Clopton produced many songs for the singer but only saw some income statements for a handful of the songs since he started working for Konvict in 2008.
Clopton says the financial cover-ups were intentional, so Akon could keep Clopton’s royalties for himself. Along with the seven-figure settlement, Clopton seeks to have his contract with Akon to be terminated.
Akon has yet to respond to the suit.
The St. Louis-born singer is reportedly worth more than $80 million and should have no problem settling his debts.
He used some of his big bank to provide power to 16 million Africans, a project for which he obtained a $1 billion credit line. Akon’s Light Up Africa project has helped bring power to 15 African countries and counting.
