Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson didn’t let his lack of experience in elected office stop him from running for president, but the former Republican candidate has decided it was enough to take him out of the running for a Cabinet position in Donald Trump‘s new administration because he believes he lacks the background necessary to manage a federal agency.
According to Carson’s longtime advisor, Armstrong Williams, Carson was hesitant to take a position that could cripple Donald Trump’s presidency, despite the fact he ran on his own.
“Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency,” Williams said.” The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.”
The renowned neurosurgeon was one of Trump’s first primary opponents to jump on board his campaign. He was viewed as one of the likely picks to lead the agency that will work to roll back President Obama‘s HealthCare plan in the new administration, as well as a candidate for secretary of Education.
Earlier this month, Trump described Carson as a “brilliant physician” and said he hoped Carson “will be very much involved with my administration.”
Carson has been a member of Trump’s transition team as the president-elect, who also lacks any government experience, begins choosing key administration officials.
