In honor of Beyonce’s one-year anniversary of the release of her world-shaking album, Lemonade, she has now announced on her website this morning the creation of the Formation Scholars Awards.
Beyonce’s newly created scholarship is designed to assist women in need who are incoming or current undergrad and graduate students. According to her website, there will be four scholarships awarded to female students who are attending either Spelman University in Atlanta, Howard University in Washington, D.C., Berklee College of Music in Boston, and Parson’s School of Design in New York City. The women also must have a concentration in creative arts, music, literature, or African-American studies.
With the creation of this new scholarship, Queen Bey hopes to motivate and inspire young women to be “unafraid to think outside the box, and are bold, creative, conscious and confident” by investing in their education.
With rising debt from student loans and the all-around lack of funding towards Liberal Arts programs, the “Formation” singer’s scholarship is well needed for female students, particularly women-of-color, to continue furthering their education. However, it is not yet clear how much will be awarded to the four lucky women who are chosen or whether it is a full or partial scholarship. The award will be available for the 2017-2018 school year.
The Grammy award winning Beyonce’s blessings have been falling from the sky as she also won a Peabody Award last week for the visual companion to Lemonade. The critically acclaimed project was cited for having “the audacity of its reach and fierceness of its vision challenges our cultural imagination, while crafting a stunning and sublime masterpiece about the lives of women of color and the bonds of friendship seldom seen or heard in American popular culture.” Donald Glover a.k.a Childish Gambino was also in attendance as he won an award for his hit series, Atlanta.
