Name: G Perico
Reppin: Los Angeles (South Central), Calif.
Genre: Rap
G Perico is L.A. to the bone gristle. The 28-year-old MC looks like he is straight outta a scene from Straight Outta Compton. His voice is reminiscent of a young DJ Quik. And he’s living and rapping about a lifestyle depicted in films like Boyz N Da Hood, South Central and Menace II Society.
How real is it? Last year, the South Central native was shot upon leaving his South Broadway studio. After a short hospital visit, he performed at The Roxy that same night with a blood-soaked bandage on his leg.
“The biggest risk I take is just still being around, because motherfuckers will try to kill me,” Perico told LA Weekly about trying to transition to full-time rapping after years of full-time Crippin. “I don’t gamble money, but you could say I’m gambling my life a little bit. I’m prepared, though.”
Prior to the attempt on his life, the Jheri curl-rocking rapper was already popping, having released his Tha Innerprize Two mixtape in 2015, which featured the regionally successful single, “G Shit.”
Not only did the shooting incident not slow his career down, it added to his lore. A few months after it happened, he dropped the mixtape, Shit Don’t Stop, in October 2016, which was spearheaded by the bangers “Neva Die” and “South Central.”
Capitalizing off the splash he made last year, he put on for the gang once again dropping the All Blue project in March, which boasts guest spots from Sonny Digital and Polyester.
