When it comes to dropping audio dope, Alabama’s Young Soda has the recipe. While the South has risen to the top of the rap food chain, the talent out of Alabama has yet to equal up to some of its fellow states that reside below the Mason-Dixon Line. Native MCs likes Drama, Rich Boy, Yelawolf, Mick Jenkins and Doe B have put it down for the state. Now, the Birmingham-raised, Georgia-based spitta, Soda, is working on shaking things up with his Arm & Hammer grammar.
Born, Joel Adarius Hill, Soda’s first taste of music came in his hometown’s Ruff Pro Productions studio, where he would frequent as a teen. By the age of 15, he had been bitten by the rap bug and was focusing on his craft, while keeping one foot in the streets. Weaving his first-hand block stories into his rhymes, the self-proclaimed gangsta rapper dropped several projects as his name bubbled in the region and started to expand.
On his ongoing grind, the Third Coast MC has toured the country, sharing bills and tracks with the likes of YG, Lil Scrappy and Kirko Bangz.
In December 2015, he put out the CSM DJ Smooth-hosted Soda Ova Everything mixtape, featuring A-One, ItsFiesta, Prince Baby Yolo and others.
This year, Soda is looking to pop. Getting back in his bag, he put out his new project The Young & the Restless in early March. Spearheaded by the previously released single “Cool Whips,” the 14-song release is hosted by DJ Black Bill Gates and finds the B-Ham trap rapper cooking up solo on every track.
“The Young & the Restless mixtape is my greatest body of work to date,” Young Soda told GRIP. “As diverse and well-rounded as my mixtape is, it has not one feature. I really want the streets to know I’m here for them and I represent the struggle, but believe in triumph. This is the project of my career that I found myself and a new sound; DJ Drama coined it best as Rhythm and Street.”
Now, with new ears on his wave, the mission is to never go flat.
