For 20 years, civil rights attorney Benjamin Lloyd Crump has been fighting against injustices of the common man, woman and child. Most known for his advocacy in the Trayvon Martin case, his representation of the family of Michael Brown and his legal prowess for the family of Tamir Rice, Crump has petitioned that black and brown lives matter just as much as anyone else’s.
GRIPMagazine.com caught up with during S3 Summit last week.
“The system intends to keep the status quo and try to devalue black and brown lives,” says Crump. “We have to fight. We have to scream. We have to stand up, do everything it takes for our children, so that their lives matter and not be swept under the rug.”
Crump practices law at the Tallahassee, Fla.-based law firm Parks & Crump, LLC. In many instances, such as Trayvon Martin, he offers his legal services pro bono. Martin, 17, was killed by George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012. Crump represents Martin’s family.
He also represents the family of Michael Brown, a 17-year-old African-American man shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Mo.
“We have to fight for our children because if we don’t fight for our children, ain’t nobody gone fight for our children,” says Crump. “The mainstream media isn’t covering it. That’s why we need to cover it.”
