Chicago emcee Common has a lot to be thankful for and he reveals that women are at the forefront of his success.

Common recently sat down with MAKERS and talked about how the love and support of his mother laid the foundation for his life. “My home and my foundation has been my mother. She really taught me how to love by example and in some ways could be very disciplinarian…Knowing that my mother worked hard for me to be able to get into college and she really barely knew I even rapped,” Common says. “It was a tough back and forth but when my mother saw that I was truly sincere and passionate she embraced it.”

In addition to his mother, the Windy City poet cites Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni as inspirations for his first raps at 12 years old. The interview touches on Common’s many accomplishments and highlights the rappers career in and out of the entertainment industry.
