De La Hoya Wants to Invite Donald Trump To Canelo Alvarez Fight [Watch]

Canelo and De La Hoya

While Golden Boy Promotions founder and legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya gears up for the upcoming fight between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., he gave a special invitation to the bout to an unexpected guest.

According to TMZ Sports, De la Hoya invited President Donald J. Trump to the fight taking place this Saturday (May 6) at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. De La Hoya’s reasoning, he intends to show Trump firsthand “how important Mexicans are for the U.S. economy”.

The commercial for the fight shows Alvarez, who was recently ranked as the world’s best pound for pound boxer, and Chavez Jr. running through a massive border wall. This wall was akin to President Trump’s planned wall he has been announcing since he began his Presidential campaign in 2015.

“That was the wall around my fence,” says De La Hoya. “It wasn’t no shot to Trump, c’mon,” he laughs.

De La Hoya, who Alvarez is signed with says that he has no bad blood against Trump and says that he has been a longtime supporter of the sport.

“Trump is a big supporter of boxing, he loves boxing,” said the former champion. “I remember he went to several of my fights, he promoted several of [Mike] Tyson’s fights and so it was kind of like a little ‘jab’ to Trump kind of like to get his hair a little rattled and just to show him that you have two Mexican national fighters busting through the wall and guest what they’re gonna do? They’re gonna have such an economic impact in Vegas. They’re gonna generate so much money, millions of dollars on pay per views, and the gates. It’s two Mexicans that are doing great, unlike what he’s stated in the past.”

De La Hoya insists that the cheeky commercial was all in good fun, adding “Either I would put him right next to me ringside or I would give him some binoculars with a ticket.”

Trump has held several memorable fights over the years at his now defunct, Trump Plaza Casino in Atlantic City, NJ.

The Alvarez vs Chavez Jr. fight will be taking place on May 6 at 9PM ET/6PM PT live on pay per view. Check out the interview below.
