Jay-Z’s legacy is rapidly becoming the blueprint for the transition of the new black community. The drug dealer turned iconic rapper and business mogul has set the bar even higher for new school rappers with his new platinum, conscious album, 4:44. 4:44 received one of the greatest endorsements from Diddy claiming the black community needed this album like they need the Bible and Quran.
During his recent hosting gig on OVO Sound Radio on Apple Music (Jul 23), Diddy sang the Blueprint rapper’s praise on his new album that went platinum within a week from streaming sales alone. Diddy considered 4:44 to be one of the greatest albums of the year and much needed in the black community much like the Bible and Quran. “But especially to the black men..if you don’t get that. You need it like you need the bible and Quran…,” said Diddy.
Jay-Z dropped some much-needed knowledge about black economics and the broken mentality of the average black male. Much like his wife’s last album, Lemonade, his album addressed many issues that affected his family as well as the average person’s life. Using his personal struggles with his infidelity and wife’s infertility rumors, the infamous elevator fight with his sister-in-law Solange, and the unfortunate condition of the black communities, he simply tried “to give you a million dollar worth of game for 9.99.”
Although some are claiming Jay-Z is just hopping on the conscious trend the current Hip-Hop generation has extended from the early conscious rappers like Nas and Common. Many are applauding Mr. Carter for rapping about topics that can uplift the community. Creating financial freedom for your family by establishing good credit and investing in properties in the black community are topics rarely touched on in music period let along rap music. But Jay-Z left no stone unturned. Even bared his bloody hands from the cuts on his wife’s skin from infidelities and failed pregnancies making his 4:44 his most personal in his nearly 30-year career.
Jay-Z has undoubtedly become one of the greatest rappers of our generation and with his wife being the greatest R&B Divas of our time, the Carter reign is just beginning.
