Hip Hop Cleans House at 2016 American Music Awards

Hip Hop cleaned house during the 2016 American Music Awards at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater last night.

Fifth Harmony and Ty Dolla $ign brought home awards for Favorite Collaboration on their single “Work From Home.” Kendrick Lamar performed. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj pulled off a racy, show-stopping performance of their “Side To Side” duet. And Drake racked up awards for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for Views. And the Toronto rapper also debuted a new Apple commercial, featuring him working out and lip syncing to Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,” and even set a new record with 13 nominations, the most AMA nominations in one year.

Drizzy beat out Michael Jackson, the last artist to hold that record with 11 in 1984. Upon receiving his award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, he gave a shout out to actress Nina Dobrev who presented him with his award.

“Thank you very much. Me and Nina were on Degrassi together by the way,” he said. “I really want to thank everybody who helped me make this album … I want to thank the city of Toronto, and of course I want to thank the fans and my parents. My dad’s here tonight.”

Drake’s album Views, the fourth studio album by the Canadian rapper, was released on April 29 by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Republic Records and shot to number one on the charts and was also the first album to reach one billion streams on Apple music.views

The awards were co-hosted by Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharoah. Other performances included John Legend’s soul-stirring “Love Me Now,” Lady Gaga, The Chainsmokers and Bruno Mars. See below for the list of last night’s winners.
