Jennifer Lopez to star as Colombian cocaine queen Griselda Blanco for HBO biopic

Jennifer Lopez is set to star as late drug lord Griselda Blanco in an upcoming HBO biopic about the woman known as “The Godmother,” “the Black Widow” and the “Queen of Cocaine.”

LBI Entertainment and Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions are working on a movie that will follow the life and death of Blanco, who is known for her notorious role in drug trafficking in the 1970s and ’80s. Lopez will play Blanco and also executive produce the film, alongside Laine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Julie Yorn, Rick Yorn and others.

Lopez told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement that she has “been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years.”

Blanco was a Colombian drug lord of the Medellín Cartel and a pioneer in the Miami-based cocaine drug trade and underworld during the 1970s and early 1980s. It has been estimated that she was responsible for up to 200 murders while transporting cocaine from Colombia to New York, Miami and Southern California.

Blanco was killed in Colombia in 2012 after having been shot twice in the head in a drive-by shooting by a motorcyclist in Medellín, Colombia. She was a subject of the 2006 documentary “Cocaine Cowboys,” which focused on the Miami drug trade.
