John Boyega and Algee Smith in New Trailer For ‘Detroit’ [Watch]

DETROIT
Boyega and Smith in the new film.

John Boyega and The New Edition Story’s Algee Smith are featured in the new trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s DETROIT.

The new film is based on the infamous 1967 Detroit race riots. It sets out to tell the “gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest” during the city’s riots. The trailer was released this week on Apr. 12.

The thrilling snippet gives fans just enough to leave us on the edges of our seats, craving more, but not too much to ruin the film’s plot. The focus of DETROIT seems to rest on the stories of the police with Boyega, Smith with the citizens of the hotel, and the of people Detroit, Mich. and how they were affected by one of the worst riots in American history, while also highlighting the extremely tense and hostile nature between the many conflicting racial and systemic relationships that exist during the 1960s.

Perhaps one of the most chilling moments that hits closest to home is when Boyega’s character, a police officer, is seen encouraging Smith’s character to just “survive the night” as police officers violently raid the hotel when they heard a gunshot from a starter pistol earlier.

For who might not know, the 1967 Detroit riot, also known as the 12th Street riot, occurred when a police raid of a local after hours bar occurred on a dark Sunday morning. The riot became one of the deadliest and most destructive riots in American history as it lasted five days and dramatically surpassed the 1943 Detroit riot.

Boyega and Smith both star in the intense film. Both men have had a busy year thus far as Smith starred as Ralph Tresvant in BET and Viacom’s highest rated miniseries, The New Edition Story. Boyega has topped the charts as Finn in the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will be reprising his role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.  He also managed to tugs at fans heartstrings as Netflix resurfaced his 2014 film, Imperial Dreams.

The film’s trailer previews ahead of its set Aug. 4 release date.
