John Legend is no stranger to success when it comes to television; after a successful debut of the hit WGN America series “Underground”, which he produced, Legend is back with a new series focused on Black Wall Street.
The new series, titled “Black Wall Street,” is based on the city of Greenwood, Tulsa. The suburb was once known as one of the most successful and wealthiest Black communities in the United States during the early 20th century, until the hideous Tulsa race riot resulted in the destruction of the town after the massacre of thousands of Black men and women at the hands of racist Whites.
“We’re so excited to continue to grow our relationship with WGN America,” Get Lifted’s Mike Jackson said. “Our experience working with them on Underground has been fantastic. Additionally, we’re looking forward to working with our friend Tika Sumpter to help tell this incredible story that many people know nothing about.”
“Black Wall Street” will be produced by Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co., and executive produced by actress Tika Sumpter. The show will explore how Black Wall Street and the community around its creation became a safe haven for Blacks. It will also examine the backlash that the community faced over the course of the two day rampage.
If picked up, the show will debut sometime in 2018.
