Kanye West’s ‘The Life of Pablo’ Is the First-Ever Stream-Only Album To Go Platinum

Kanye West can officially add another historic milestone to his list of major accomplishments with his music career.

According to Pitchfork, his latest release The Life of Pablo has been certified platinum after being streamed over three billion times, while simultaneously becoming the very first cloud-exclusive album to top the Billboard 200 chart.

West released the album via TIDAL on Feb. 14 of 2016  following the album’s premiere at a Fashion Week event for his Yeezy line. A work-in-progress project, the album was updated several times post-release, with a new mix or track (ie “Saint Pablo”) on an almost weekly basis. TLOP is also the seventh consecutive solo Kanye album to go platinum, which is likely its own title, though that hasn’t been confirmed at the time of publishing.

While there was some criticism around the album,  it has seen remarkable success through fans, media, and music critics worldwide. It’s also said that the album was pirated nearly half a million times in the week following its release, though the actual number has never been confirmed.

Kanye was most recently featured on a song off Mary J. Blige’s new album called “Love Yourself.”
