Three days following the release of his latest studio album DAMN., Kendrick Lamar once again made his return to the topic of every conversation after his gripping set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
On Sunday (April 16) thousands of people bore witness to performances and moments they will never forget as Kendrick Lamar made sure concertgoers experienced the most epic Easter of all times as he closed out the show with a very memorable headlining set.
Top Dawg Entertainment opened the set with a special presentation of The Damn Legend of Kung Fu Kenny, a three-part short film designed like an old-school kung-fu flick (complete with subtitles) that featured the rapper as his alter-ego, Kung Fu Kenny a.k.a. Black Turtle, on a mission, to “find The Glow.” He takes on Snake, a cobra who morphs into a female martial artist, Mortal Kombat style. As she lay helpless on the ground following their battle, she tells Lamar, “You thought you could save the world. The Glow will shine bright in the dark.”
Kicking off the performance portion of the set, Kendrick opened with the Fox News segment sampled on the album, Kendrick performed “DNA.” and “ELEMENT.” before he showed off his acrobatic skills and hung in mid-air to perform “PRIDE.”
Besides defying gravity, Kendrick also made sure to help fans OD with an appearance from ScHoolboy Q, who performed “tHat Part” after killing his own set during night two. Kenny didn’t stop there, inviting fellow Coachella performers Future and Travis Scott, who also performed at the festival the night prior.
In other K. Dot news, the legendary DJ Kid Capri sat down with Mass Appeal and talked about teaming up with TDE to be one of the few features on the highly anticipated project, which according to Capri lead to the creation of some tracks that have yet to be used.
“There’s a gang of stuff that hasn’t been used yet. That’s why I said I think he’s doing something later on, or he might be doing something for his show, but there’s a lot of stuff that I put out there.”
Although Kid Capri does not give any specific details, he does mention that he believes TDE will be dropping some new Kendrick material soon.
“I think they’ve got some more stuff,” Capri continued. “There are some more things—coming out later, but for right now, that’s what happened.”
