Comedian Larry Wilmore recently sat down with Senator Bernie Sanders for an in-depth interview for The Bernie Sanders Show.

During the interview, the two longtime friends discussed Bernie’s election bid and loss.

“The reason I was running for the Democratic nomination is that I thought it was imperative that a progressive voice be heard,” Sanders said. “I believe then and I believe now that there is an enormous amount of pain in this country and if a strong progressive ran in the race, many important issues would see the light of day. I think at the end of the day and one of the reasons Trump ended up winning is because the debate ended that there was economic success under Obama with no question, unemployment went down, we overcame the financial deficit he inherited; but in the midst of that there were also a lot of terrible things going on in the economy that Congress was the cause of. The take who gives a damn about the ordinary people who don’t contribute to large campaigns and Obama kind of dropped the ball on that one, so Trump comes in and picks it up seemingly relating and ‘going against the establishment’, manipulating the frustrations of everyday Americans.”
