20 Years Later : Remembering Lil’ Kim’s “Not Tonight” (Remix)

Lil' Kim

Twenty years ago today, Lil’ Kim released her hit single, “Not Tonight” (Remix). The song was taken from the original “Not Tonight”, which is featured on Lil’ Kim’s debut album, Hard Core. The song did not make the album, but it is found on the soundtrack for the 1997 film, Nothing To Lose starring Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins.

The song featured Angie Martinez, Left Eye, Missy Elliott, and Da Brat. The video which was filmed in West Palm Beach, Florida is known for it’s star-studded cameos. Cameos were made by Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Xscape, and more. It was a female movement in hip-hop.

Female emcees are like minorities in the male-dominated music industry. They were then and they are now. A lot has changed since the release of the “Not Tonight” (Remix). Now in hip-hop, women have found themselves competing with each other or simply staying to themselves. In the midst of all the beef today, there are no collaborations and no unity.
