Ballerina Misty Copeland is no stranger to the word “muse.” Prince once dubbed her his own muse, after seeing her prowess and individuality in the world of dance. Her battles to overcome the status quo led her to be chosen for American Ballet Theatre solos until becoming its first ever African-American woman principal in its 75 years of existence. And now the late High Priest of Pop is far from the only one to have felt inspiration from Copeland.
Just like the thousands of little dancers at the barre, Estée Lauder calls Copeland influential, which is why they named the ballerina as their newest ambassador. “She is all about feminine strength, power, dedication and passion, and you see that in what she does every day, whether she is performing or inspiring the next generation of dancers,” said Aerin Lauder of Estée Lauder, “I think she is a wonderful role model.” Copeland’s first role with the brand will be acting as global spokesmodel for its Modern Muse Perfume. The fragrance itself is an earthly blend of forest and floral scents. Beginning August 2017, she will be the face of the fragrance campaign with visuals appearing on TV, in stores, online and in print.
To introduce her role with Estée Lauder, Copeland penned a letter to her younger self for Glamour. “It’ll be a long journey to discovering and accepting who you are, to knowing that different can be beautiful,” she writes. “But trust that you will eventually discover beauty in your own terms.” Check out how the ballerina and Estée Lauder are inspiring others with the Modern Muse campaign.
