Motown to Release ‘Detroit’ The Soundtrack Featuring New Music From The Roots [Watch]

Motown Records recently announced that they will be releasing the soundtrack to the upcoming film Detroit with original music from The Roots. In addition to The Roots, the soundtrack will feature music from Motown’s classic artist roster that dominated music when the events of the film took place in 1967.

The new song from The Roots is entitled “It Ain’t Fair” and it features R&B/Soul singer, Bilal. Roots drummer and producer, Questlove, recently spoke about the record.

‘It Ain’t Fair‘ was designed to emphasize the importance of social justice through the prism of late-sixties Detroit, which means many things culturally and politically, and also certain things musically. It’s been fifty years since the events of this film, but the powerful images I saw on the screen reminded me that we’re still going through the same things now, that knowledge produces anger, but not despair: music has the power to express both anguish and hope.”

Motown Records was founded in Detroit by Berry Gordy in 1959. The label is home to current artists such as NeYo, Erykah Badu, Kem, Lil Yachty, Kevin Ross, BJ The Chicago Kid and others. Detroit is film that tells the story of the 1967 riots that took place Detroit, MI and stars John Boyega, Jacob Latimore, Anthony Mackie, Jason Mitchell, Algee Smith, Peyton Alex Smith, and many more.

Detroit hits theaters on August 4th. Watch Questlove talk about The Roots contribution to the film’s soundtrack below as well as the trailer.
