Netflix’s ‘Dear White People’ Series Causes Public Outcry

Netflix caused quite a commotion after the streaming service announced the premiere date for their upcoming TV series Dear White People.

The series is an adaptation of the independent film of the same name about Black college students dealing with racism, which eventually led to a riot at the college. Now the same director, Jack Moore, who made the original film has now been given an opportunity to direct his film on the streaming network.

The trailer begins with the main character Logan Browning sitting in a DJ booth telling White people what Halloween costumes are, and aren’t appropriate. As she continues in her explanation, footage of stereotypical White fraternity and sorority students are shown in blackface.

Since the trailer’s debut, it has been a subject of much backlash from audiences. The YouTube trailer has received more than 233,000 dislikes and less than 20,000 thumbs up.

On Twitter, the hashtag #BoycottNetflix began trending. Many people said that they were cancelling their subscription and also circulating the tweet of Moore, who said “Seriously, f**k white people” after President Donald Trump won in the elections.
