No gun was recovered from the scene of where a Chicago police sergeant gunned down 19-year-old Kajuan Raye Wednesday after the officer said the man pointed a gun in his direction, the Chicago Tribune reports.
“We were not able to locate a weapon as of yet,” Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a news conference at headquarters. “We have some missing information in our timeline.
He said, “There are still many unanswered questions.”
Officials say police responded to a battery in progress in the 1400 block of West 65th Street. According to Johnson, the officer saw a man that “matched the description of the offender.” The police sergeant identified himself as an officer and approached the man but he ran away. And the officer began chasing him.
Johnson said that during the chase, the man “turned and pointed” a weapon at the sergeant two separate times. That’s when the sergeant shot, Johnson said.
The man, identified as Raye, was shot in multiple times in the stomach and later died at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner. Surveillance video obtained shows Raye running from police at different angles. But the actual shooting is not caught on video.
