Queens Street Named After Phife Dawg

Queens Street Named After Phife Dawg

The life and legacy of Phife Dawg is forever immortalized with Saturday’s unveiling of Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor Way at the intersection of Linden Blvd. and 192nd St. in Queens, NY.

Fans from far and near attended the ceremony, along with Phife’s mom Cheryl Boyce-Taylor, fellow A Tribe Called Quest front man Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes and Michael Rapaport, director 2011 documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, were all on hand during the ceremony. The crowd chanted Phife’s name as the street sign bearing the D-dawg’s name was revealed.

“This is no coincidence,” Tip said. “This is divine order, so I want everybody to remember this album we put out has nothing to do with us…fame and notoriety. It’s for reason and purpose. That same reason and purpose is instilled and embedded in every one of you. Don’t give up. Don’t give up. Don’t feel bad because you have to sometimes do what you have to do to survive and to do better for yourself and your family.”

Currently…. lots of love from the #community for #PhifeDawg #streetnaming #atcq #hiphop #Queens #idaneekmiller

Councilman Daneek Miller, of New York’s 27th District, also added a few words.

“We occasionally do these street re-namings, and this is by far the largest one I’ve seen anywhere in the city,” Miller said.

Just last week, ATCQ released the first video “We the People…” from their new and final album We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your
Service
, their first new album in 18 years. Touching on subjects from mass incarceration, discrimination and gentrification, “We the People….” is definitely an on-time single.

Despite it’s refreshing to the ears of Hip Hop lovers, the album release seems bittersweet as it marks the end of an iconic era for a legendary group. The features guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Elton John, André 3000, Consequence, Busta Rhymes, and more. In October, Q-Tip revealed the album’s release date with a note that also confirmed this will be the final album from the group after Phife Dawg tragically passed away earlier this year.
