Tragedy struck San Bernardino, Calif.’s North Park Elementary School when an unidentified person shot three people, killing one and proceeded to commit suicide.
The shooting occurred on Monday (Apr. 10) when a person arrived at the elementary school and murdered a woman, whose name have yet to be released. Two other unidentified students shot and were rushed to a nearby hospital. In a press conference with San Bernardino Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Madden, it was stated that the two are listed in critical condition, but their identities are being withheld until the family has been properly notified.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired around 10:27 AM. San Bernardino officers arrived within four minutes of the call.
The suspect had come to the school as a visitor and signed into the front office as he was armed with a handgun, said Capt. Ron Maass, who is leading the investigation for the San Bernardino Police Department.
The entire shooting took place in one class room and the students who were injured were only shot because they were near the deceased woman, said Maass.
Students were then taken to the nearby Cajon High School for safety immediately following the incident.
As of press time, it is unclear how many shots were fired or whether-or-not domestic violence played a role. North Park Elementary School will be closed for the next two days, as said by San Bernardino Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden.
San Bernardino was also the site of the tragic December 2015 terror attack that killed 14 people and injured 22 others.
