Gabrielle Union Gives a Sneak Peek of Her First Collection with New York & Co.

While she’s a vet to the acting midway through season four on Being Mary Jane as a fictional news anchor, Gabrielle Union tackles her first namesake collection as a clothing designer. The actress will release apparel and accessories for New York & Company’s fall season on Aug. 16.

Union eagerly took to social media to reveal news of her debut. “Been waiting to announce this one…and the moment is here!!!! Proud to share that I have designed my own collection for @nyandcompany.” The specialty retailer announced in March that the BET star would be joining them as a face of New York & Company. She inked a deal with its sub-brand, 7th Avenue Design Studio, and has been featured on sporting its spring/summer silhouettes in campaign visuals. With an upcoming collection. she joins the likes of fellow actress Eva Mendes whose time at the retailer is been thus far successful with numerous collections. Union is expected to produce at least six collections, reports WWD, that include three each for fall and spring.

Notably, Union’s work for the company has purposely been inspired by her character Mary Jane Paul, a fashionable and career-driven woman climbing the ladder —much like how The Limited adopted Scandal’s Olivia Pope’s style a few years ago. “Mary Jane’s style reflects power, leadership, and risk taking,” the actress said after signing the multi-year deal “She wears classic styles but with a twist, which is why I think she’d definitely shop at New York & Company,”

Union wanted to make affordable clothes and found an outlet that aids “women who want to look on-point without breaking the bank.” The first collection for label “Gabrielle Union” has a price cap of $140, according to WWD, and is only that high because of its outerwear. The collection also includes suits, pants, joggers, dresses, bodysuits and jumpsuits that flatter all body types up to sizes 20 and XXL. It will be separated into two parts, with the second due Aug. 31.

Be on the lookout for the Gabrielle Union Collection, dropping Aug. 16 in stores and online.
