Eve Appears In PETA’s Neglected Dog Campaign

As frigid winter weather grips much of the U.S.,  Eve appears in a brand-new PETA ad that proclaims, “Every Hound Needs a Hero,” and goes on to stress the importance of treating dogs like members of the family and never leaving them chained up outside to suffer and freeze. In addition, the Barbershop star reveals in a new video why she was eager to partner with PETA for the campaign, which coincides with “Unchain a Dog” Month.

She calls footage of dogs chained outside in the freezing cold and pleading for a scrap of affection the “saddest video I’ve ever seen” and adds, “Keeping your dog outside doesn’t make you tough or cool—it just makes you a bully. Please, let your dog live indoors as part of the family. And if you see a chained dog, speak up. Because if not you, then who?”

The Pitbull in a Skirt also added,

“Outdoor dogs are emotionally and often physically neglected. The phrase “out of sight, out of mind” usually applies to them. Not only are they lonely and sad, they’re also often deprived of basic necessities like food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. Extreme weather is an added stress in the winter, when they shiver endlessly in the bitter cold and sometimes even freeze to death. In the summer, they’re vulnerable to heat exhaustion—when all they want are scratches behind their ears, walks around the block, and the opportunity to curl up at their guardians’ feet at night indoors.”

PETA (whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”) will be running the ad as a billboard in several cities—including Baltimore; Chicago; Detroit; Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; and Eve’s hometown of Philadelphia—and urges anyone who witnesses neglect to report it to local authorities.

Eve is part of a growing list of celebrities—including Jhené Aiko, Kid Ink, P!nk, Mýa, TLC’s Chilli, Kesha, Sia, and many others—who have teamed up with PETA to promote kindness to animals.

Thank you, Eve, for sharing this important message! Chaining dogs is one of the cruelest things anyone can do. Dogs need and deserve to be treated as family members.
